Siim Kallas, the Vice-president of the EC, who is in charge of transport politics, stated that transport must cooperate with the requirements of the environmental protection and social and economic conditions.
Siim Kallas took part in a high-ranking conference in Warsaw – “Implementation of the Single European Sky and its extension into the third countries’, organized by Sławomir Nowak, the Minister of Transport, within the scope of the Polish presidency. He stated that if we want to avoid problems in European airspace, the aims must be realized. It means starting (from the beginning of 2012) all-European aviation traffic management system (ATM) and also modernizing and unifying 27 national spaces into a few FAB.
On Tuesday, in Amsterdam will take place a debate on the future of the European transport webs TENT-T. The Commissioner said that, according to the EC project, in years 2014-2020 investments for extension of this web, for railway and other areas, and also for the intelligent traffic management systems are going to be increased. In the EU member states with a big population, the worst problem are bigger and bigger traffic jams – he added. The ‘White Paper’ on the EU transport politics until 2050 specifies that the fight with them is one of the main aims. According to this document, also a development of infrastructure in cities is really significant, so that until 2030 the number of passengers, using the group means of transport, would double and the quantity of the serious road accidents and CO2 emission would decrease. The costs of noise and pollution are planned to be included in the rate of the access to the infrastructure that all kinds of transport pay. The Commissioner underlined that carriers and car producers have kindly accepted this document.
Siim Kallas also said that the EC does not want to limit the mobility. However, transport will have to be developed respecting a natural environment and social and economic situations.
